The area of La Sierra Acres became a part of Riverside in 1964 in the largest annexation in the city’s history. The urban environment reflects a more rural lifestyle, with large blocks and large residential lots. The region is almost completely developed for low density residential uses and most of these were built prior to the area’s incorporation. Because of this, many of the homes in this area reflect a rural, county-style character not found elsewhere within the City. Animal-keeping is popular in this area. The terrain of this region is composed of rolling hills and this creates a good mix of vistas and sheltered areas. Its major population increase took place in the 1950's and 1960's, which mirrors the pattern for the rest of Riverside. La Sierra, with a population of only 25,000 people, was annexed into Riverside in 1964. The Tyler Mall (now the Galleria) was built in 1970 and has evolved over time, helping to ensure the continued growth and success of La Sierra and the City. The most recent addition to the neighborhood is a 185 acre, 1,000 unit master-planed housing development RiverWalk. The development offer a mix of housing types, from large lot single family houses to condominiums, along with open space, recreational and community amenities.
